Driveway Drainage Solutions: What Actually Works
Why your driveway floods, which of the four fixes suits your ground, and what each one costs installed in Hampshire and Surrey.
Work out why it floods before you buy a fix
There are only four reasons a driveway holds water. The fall is wrong or absent, so water has nowhere to go. The outlet is blocked or undersized. The ground below has stopped accepting water, which is normal on clay after a wet fortnight. Or water is arriving from somewhere else, typically the road, a neighbour's slope, or a downpipe discharging onto the surface.
Diagnose with a hose on a dry day and watch where the water actually travels. Half the drives we are called to in Farnham have no drainage fault at all: they have a garage threshold set lower than the drive and no threshold drain.

Channel drains, done properly
A channel drain is only as good as what it connects to. We see far too many installed with the outlet running into fifty millimetres of gravel, which works for a season and then silts up.
Done properly, the channel is bedded in concrete on both sides so it cannot float or tilt, it has a fall along its length towards the outlet, it uses a load rated grating suitable for a car, and it discharges into a real destination: a soakaway, a surface water drain you are permitted to use, or a properly sized border. A silt trap or a sump unit at the low end is worth the extra £120 because it makes the system cleanable.
Soakaways on clay
Clay accepts water slowly, so soakaways here have to be larger than the textbook figure. We do a percolation test rather than guessing: three test fills of a trial pit and a measured drop rate.
A typical domestic crate soakaway is 1 to 2 cubic metres of modular crates wrapped in geotextile, sited at least five metres from the house foundations, with an inspection point so it can be jetted. On a genuinely impermeable clay plot a soakaway may simply not be viable, and the honest answer is a permeable surface with a wider distribution layer, or an agreed connection to a surface water sewer.
The rules you have to satisfy
Surface water from a new or replacement front driveway must not discharge onto the public highway. That is the practical effect of the 2008 permitted development change, and councils in Rushmoor, Hart and Guildford do enforce it when the crossover is inspected.
You are also not allowed to connect surface water into a foul sewer. If your only feasible outfall is a public surface water sewer, that connection needs the water company's approval, and it takes weeks, so plan it before the drive is dug.
What we do on a typical waterlogged drive
Survey the levels with a laser, find the true low point, then pick the least invasive fix that will still be working in ten years. On a sound drive with the wrong fall, we often lift and relay a strip rather than rebuild everything.

- A domestic crate soakaway is typically £900 to £2,000 fitted in 2026, depending on the volume needed, the depth of the dig and the ground conditions. Clay plots need larger systems than sandy ones.
- Can I drain my driveway onto the road?
- No. Surface water from a new or replacement front driveway must be dealt with inside your own boundary, either through a permeable surface, a fall to a planted area, or a soakaway.
