Acoustic Fencing

An acoustic barrier only works if it has mass and no gaps. That is the whole engineering story, and it is why a standard lap panel fence does nothing for noise. We build acoustic lines from dense tongue and groove timber or composite panels with sealed joints, a closed base detail and posts sized for the wind load a solid barrier attracts. Typical drivers are a planning condition, a plant or chiller enclosure, or a residential boundary against a working yard.

What's included

  • Tongue and groove timber panels at 25kg to 35kg per square metre for genuine mass
  • Composite and reflective faced panels where maintenance access is limited
  • Sealed joints and a closed base detail because a 5 percent gap undoes the barrier
  • Heights from 1.8m to 4.0m with steel posts sized for solid panel wind loading
  • Absorptive faces on the noise source side where reflection would move the problem
  • £5m public liability and £10m employers liability, RAMS issued before mobilisation

Our process

  1. 01

    Noise source review

We identify what is actually generating the noise and where the receptor sits, because barrier height depends on the line of sight between them.

  2. 02

    Barrier specification

Panel mass, height, absorptive facing and post section written down, along with any planning condition wording being satisfied.

  3. 03

    Foundations

Solid barriers catch wind, so post foundations are deeper and wider than a standard fence and are cured before panels are loaded.

  4. 04

    Panel build

Panels installed with sealed joints and the base detail closed to the ground or a kerb, leaving no acoustic leak.

  5. 05

    Handover

Line inspected for gaps, gate seals checked, guarantee and timber maintenance notes issued.

Indicative pricing

Acoustic fencing typically runs £150 to £280 per metre fitted depending on height, panel mass and absorptive facing.

Why us

30+ years on the tools across Surrey & Hampshire. Family-run, fully insured, no subcontracted crews.

Local factors we plan around

  • properties backing onto the A331, M3 and A3 corridors where road noise is the sole driver
  • trade counters and depots with early morning loading next to residential gardens
  • planning conditions attached to Rushmoor and Hart consents that name a specific noise target
  • rooftop and ground level plant enclosures needing ventilation designed into the barrier
  • made ground on former industrial plots where solid barrier foundations need to go deeper

Frequently asked questions

How much noise will an acoustic fence actually cut?
A correctly built mass loaded barrier that breaks the line of sight between source and receptor typically delivers a perceived halving of noise, which is around a 10dB reduction. Anyone promising silence is selling something. Height, mass and gap free construction do the work.
Why will a normal fence panel not do?
Sound travels through the gaps and through light timber. A lap panel weighs a fraction of an acoustic panel and has visible daylight between boards, so it blocks a view and almost nothing else.
Is this to satisfy a planning condition?
Frequently. If your consent references a noise assessment, send us the wording and the target figure. We specify panel mass and height against that document so the barrier stands up at discharge of condition rather than being rebuilt afterwards.
Can it enclose a plant room or chiller?
Yes. Enclosures need an absorptive face pointing at the plant, ventilation designed in so equipment still breathes, and removable panels for maintenance access. We detail all three at survey.
What does acoustic fencing cost?
Most acoustic barriers run £150 to £280 per metre fitted depending on height, panel mass and whether an absorptive face is required. Foundations on made ground can add to that and are surveyed first.
How long does timber acoustic fencing last?
Pressure treated tongue and groove panels on galvanised or concrete posts give 20 years plus with the base kept clear of soil. Composite panels last longer again where access for future maintenance is difficult.
