What is the difference between W-section and D-section pales?

W-section pales are corrugated across their width, which makes them far stiffer and much harder to bend or lever. D-section pales are rounded and lighter, cheaper per metre and easier on the eye. Yards, depots and substations get W-section; car parks and softer boundaries usually take D-section.
