Estate Fencing
Estate fencing is the opposite brief to a security perimeter. Nobody is trying to keep a thief out; the job is to mark a boundary across open ground, contain stock or horses, and disappear into the landscape while doing it. Long runs, uneven ground and gateways for machinery are the real challenges, so we set out the line first and price the run against ground conditions rather than a flat metre rate.

What's included
- Traditional three and four rail post and rail in pressure treated softwood or oak
- Steel estate railings with a slim profile that reads as almost invisible at distance
- Stock netting and horse safe mesh additions where animals are contained
- Driven or dug posts depending on ground, with strainers at ends, corners and gateways
- Field gates from 6ft to 16ft with heavy duty hanging posts set properly
- Fully insured with a written workmanship guarantee on every run
Our process
- 01
Line setting out
We walk and mark the boundary, agree gateway positions and note where ground changes from firm to soft.
- 02
Materials choice
Softwood, oak or steel decided against expected life, budget and whether the fence is seen from a house or a lane.
- 03
Post work
Posts driven where ground allows for a tighter fit, dug and consolidated where it does not, with braced strainers at every stress point.
- 04
Rails and gates
Rails fixed to follow ground contours cleanly, gates hung plumb and swing tested with the hanging post over dug.
- 05
Walk the finished line
Full run inspected with you, offcuts cleared, guarantee and timber care notes issued.

Why us
30+ years on the tools across Surrey & Hampshire. Family-run, fully insured, no subcontracted crews.
Local factors we plan around
- paddocks and smallholdings around Odiham, Crondall and the Hampshire lanes
- parkland frontages where a slim steel railing keeps the view open from the house
- heavy clay runs where posts have to be dug and consolidated rather than driven
- long boundaries with a single access point that dictates where materials are dropped
- gateways sized for tractors and horseboxes rather than a standard field gate width
Frequently asked questions
- Post and rail or steel estate railings?
- Post and rail is cheaper per metre, quick to repair and right for paddocks and working land. Steel estate railings cost more but have a very slim profile that almost vanishes across parkland, and they will outlast timber several times over. Long views tend to justify steel; working paddocks rarely do.
- Is it suitable for horses?
- Yes, with the correct detail. Rails fixed on the animal side, no protruding fixings, and horse safe mesh rather than standard stock netting where a hoof could go through. We confirm the specification with you before ordering.
- How long does timber post and rail last?
- Pressure treated softwood gives 15 to 20 years in normal Surrey and Hampshire ground. Cleft or sawn oak lasts considerably longer and weathers silver, which is why it is chosen on properties where the fence is part of the view.
- Can you fence a long rural run with poor access?
- That is standard work for us. We plan material drops along the line, use a tracked machine on soft ground where a wheeled one would rut, and reinstate any wheelings before we leave.
- What does estate fencing cost?
- Post and rail generally runs £45 to £75 per metre fitted, and steel estate railings £85 to £120 per metre depending on ground and access. Field gates with hanging and slamming posts start from £650.
- Do you supply gateways for tractors and machinery?
- Yes. Gateway width is agreed at set out, with the hanging post dug deeper and braced so a heavy field gate does not drop in the first winter.
