What a Fencing Quote Should Include
A checklist for comparing fencing quotes properly, with the domestic and commercial items that separate a real price from a number on a text message.
The eleven lines every quote should carry
Post type and section. Foundation depth and concrete mix. Panel, mesh or pale specification including height and gauge. Fixings. Gravel boards or base detail. Gate specification and hardware. Removal and disposal of the existing fence. Programme and start window. Payment terms. Insurance cover. The guarantee, in writing.
If a quote is a single figure in a text message, none of those are agreed, and every one of them is a place where the job can be shortened after you have said yes.
Domestic: the questions a homeowner should ask
Are old concrete footings being dug out or cut off at ground level? Are new panels going onto new posts or being hung off the existing ones? Is waste going with the fitters on the day? Who is speaking to the neighbour if the run is on a shared boundary?
Ask about height too. Two metres is the general permitted limit for a garden boundary and one metre where it fronts a road used by vehicles, with trellis counting towards the total.
Commercial: what a facilities manager checks first
Insurance cover, and the certificates to prove it. We carry £5m public liability and £10m employers liability, issued alongside task specific RAMS and CSCS records before anyone arrives. That pack is normally the gate to an induction, not a formality.
Then the operational questions: how the site stays secure at the end of each working day, whether temporary heras is included across open sections, whether out of hours or weekend working is priced, and how vehicle access is maintained while the run is open.
Warning signs in a fencing quote
A deposit demanded for materials before any survey. No written specification. A price per metre that covers gates. No mention of disposal. A guarantee that is spoken about but never written down. Reluctance to state foundation depth.
A fencing quote is a specification with a number attached. If the specification is missing, you cannot compare it with anything.
