Best Time of Year to Install a Driveway
When tarmac, block and resin driveways install best across the UK calendar - and the two months we usually advise customers to avoid.
The short answer
April to October is the sweet spot for any UK driveway install. Ground temperatures are warm enough for tarmac to compact properly, mortar bedding cures predictably, and resin binders hit their working window without forced heating.
We install year-round and have tricks for the cold months, but if you're planning ahead, aim for late spring or early autumn for the cleanest, easiest job.
Month by month
January-February: workable for excavation and sub-base. Tarmac surfacing is slower and we keep loads small to retain heat. Resin needs a dry day above 5°C, which Surrey usually gives us in patches.
March-April: the calendar opens up. Demand jumps after Easter and lead times start to stretch.
May-July: peak season. Best conditions across every surface; expect 4-6 week lead times in Surrey and Hampshire.
August-September: still excellent. We often clear the late-summer rush with weekend starts.
October: last good month for resin in particular. Tarmac and block carry on comfortably into November.
November-December: short daylight slows us down. Tarmac is fine if loads stay hot; resin gets harder; block is genuinely all-weather. We avoid pouring concrete footings during freezing forecasts.
The two months we usually advise against
Mid-January and mid-February for resin-bound specifically - persistent damp and low temperatures push the cure window unpredictably. We'll quote those months for tarmac or block paving without hesitation, and hold resin until March.
Why lead times matter more than weather
Booking a January slot for a May install gets you the spec you actually want. Booking in May for May gets you whatever's free. For Surrey and Hampshire homeowners planning ahead, the right time to call is roughly three months before you want work to start.
