Concrete driveway spalling, dusting and surface breakdown
Spalling is the surface layer of a concrete slab breaking away, usually in thin flakes that expose the aggregate below. Dusting is the milder version - a chalky film that never stops coming off.
Both are surface-layer faults, which is good news: the slab underneath is often perfectly sound and worth keeping.
How to tell this is your problem
- Thin flakes lifting off in patches

Repair or replace?
Keep the slab if it is sound and drains correctly - overlaying a good slab is significantly cheaper and less disruptive than removal.
Repair options, cheapest first
- 01
Patch repair with a bonded mortar
Loose material is removed, the area primed and filled with a polymer-modified repair mortar. Effective for isolated spalling; colour match is approximate.

Surface sealer or densifier
A silicate densifier hardens a dusting surface and reduces further breakdown. Best used early, before flakes appear.
- 03
Resin or micro-screed overlay
Where the slab is sound but the surface is finished, a bonded overlay gives a completely new wearing surface without breaking out the concrete.
- 04
Break out and re-lay
Reserved for slabs that are cracked through, rocking or draining the wrong way. At that point a new driveway build is the sensible spend.
Why it happens
Freeze-thaw damage
Water absorbed into the surface expands as it freezes and pops the top layer off. Non-air-entrained concrete outdoors is vulnerable.
De-icing salt
Salt accelerates freeze-thaw cycling and chemically attacks the surface paste. Damage often starts where salt is tracked in from the road.
Over-watered or over-trowelled finish
Excess water at the surface, or trowelling water back in, creates a weak laitance layer that was always going to fail.
Poor curing
Concrete that dried too fast never developed full surface strength, which shows years later as dusting.

Patching and sealing are modest. Overlays are priced per square metre; full replacement is a new driveway.
Typical duration
Patch repairs are typically a day. Overlays need dry conditions and cure time between coats.

Concrete driveway spalling: common questions
- Can spalled concrete be made to look new again?
- Patching stops the damage but is visible. If appearance matters, a full overlay or new surface is the honest route.
- Should I use salt on my concrete driveway?
- Ideally not. Grit or sand gives traction without the chemical attack that accelerates spalling.
- Is spalling a structural problem?
- Usually not. It is the top few millimetres. Cracks running full depth, rocking slabs or trip steps are the structural signs to worry about.
- Can resin be laid straight over concrete?
- Yes, over a sound, clean, dry and properly primed slab - but any live cracks or movement joints need addressing first or they reflect through.
