The shady, boggy corner where nothing grows
Every garden has one: a corner that gets no sun, stays wet, grows nothing but moss and quietly becomes a dumping ground.
There are only two honest strategies - improve the growing conditions, or stop trying to grow there and make it useful in another way.

Repair or replace?
Stop fighting it. The cheapest successful outcome is usually a small hard-landscaped area with shade planting around it, rather than repeated attempts at turf.

Drain and re-level
Getting standing water away is the first move if you want anything to grow. Often a short run to a soakaway is enough.

Raise the growing level
Raised beds filled with good soil lift roots out of the wet and make shade planting far more likely to succeed.

Paving or gravel with a bench, log store or bin screen turns a dead corner into a functioning part of the garden.

Ferns, hostas and other shade-tolerant, moisture-loving planting will thrive where lawn never will.
Why it happens
Deep shade
North-facing corners with boundary planting or buildings get very little direct light through much of the year.
Poor air circulation
Enclosed corners stay damp because moisture cannot evaporate.
Water collecting
Corners are often the lowest point, or where run-off from two hard surfaces converges.
Impoverished soil
Roots from boundary hedging and trees take moisture and nutrients, leaving thin, hungry soil.

Shady, boggy garden corner: common questions
- Will grass ever grow in deep shade?
- Shade-tolerant seed mixes help, but below a certain light level no lawn will establish reliably. Planting or paving is the durable answer.
- Is artificial grass good for a shady corner?
- It stays green, but in a damp, shaded spot it needs a properly drained base or it holds moisture and grows algae on the surface.
- Why do my fence posts rot in that corner?
- Permanent damp at ground level. Concrete posts or metal post supports are a sensible upgrade in a corner that never dries.
- Can I raise the level with topsoil to fix the wet?
- Only if the water can then get away. Raising levels without drainage moves the problem to whatever is next to it.
