Resin driveway cracking, loose stone or delamination
Resin-bound is a thin wearing surface. It has almost no structural strength of its own - it does exactly what the base beneath it does.
So when resin fails, the fault is nearly always either the base it was laid on or the mix and conditions on the day it was poured.
How to tell this is your problem
- Hairline cracks mirroring joints in the base below
- Loose stone coming away underfoot or with a brush
- Areas sounding hollow when tapped
- A patch that has lifted cleanly off the base
- Colour or texture variation between adjacent bays
Repair or replace?
Repair isolated defects. Where the base is moving, fix the base - resin will not bridge a structural problem.
Why it happens
Reflective cracking
Resin laid over existing concrete or tarmac copies whatever moves underneath. Joints and cracks in the base reappear through the surface.
Wrong resin-to-aggregate ratio
Too little resin leaves stone under-coated, which sheds as loose grit under traffic.
Laid in poor conditions
Damp or cold conditions during the pour interfere with cure and bond. Resin has a genuinely narrow weather window.
Contaminated or unprimed base
Dust, moisture or a missing primer stops the resin bonding, which shows up as hollow, lifting patches.
Repair options, cheapest first

Localised cut-out and re-pour
The failed area is cut back to sound resin, the base prepared and primed, and fresh mix laid. Expect a visible join line initially.

Overband and seal cracks
Fine reflective cracks can be sealed to keep water out where full replacement of the bay is not justified.

Address the base first
Where movement in the base is the cause, that has to be resolved or the same crack returns through any new resin.

Full re-surface
Widespread delamination is a re-lay. The old resin is removed, the base repaired and primed, and a new surface poured in one continuous operation.

Small repairs are day-rate work; full re-surfacing is priced per square metre in the same bracket as new resin-bound.
Typical duration
Repairs are usually one day plus cure time; keep traffic off for the period the installer specifies.

Resin driveway problems: common questions
- Is a colour-match repair possible on resin?
- Aggregate batches vary, so an exact match is not guaranteed. Repairs typically blend within a year of weathering but are visible at first.
- Why is my resin shedding stone?
- Usually an under-resined mix or a pour that cured badly. Light surface grit in the first weeks is normal; continuing loss is not.
- Can resin be laid over an old cracked driveway?
- Only if the existing surface is structurally sound. Cracks and movement telegraph through, which is the most common resin complaint we see.
- How long before I can drive on new resin?
- Follow the installer's figure for the products used and the weather on the day - foot traffic comes first, vehicles later.
