A retaining wall that is leaning, bulging or cracking
A retaining wall is a structure, not a decorative feature. When one starts to move, it is holding back more than it was built for - and the failure mode is rarely gradual once it starts.
This is the one garden problem where a cautious, structural approach is genuinely warranted.
How to tell this is your problem

Repair or replace?
This is one of the few cases where repair is often the wrong answer. A wall that has already moved has demonstrated its capacity - patching the face does not add strength.
Why it happens
Hydrostatic pressure
Water trapped behind a wall with no drainage exerts enormous force. This is the single most common cause of retaining failure.
No or inadequate foundation
Retaining walls need a foundation designed for the load. Many garden walls were simply built off the ground.
Surcharge from above
Adding a driveway, parking or heavy structure above a wall loads it far beyond its original design.
Wrong construction type
A single-skin wall, or stacked sleepers without proper posts and ties, cannot resist the overturning force of retained soil.

Install drainage behind the wall
Free-draining backfill, a perforated land drain and weep holes relieve water pressure. Often part of any repair.

Rebuild to a proper specification
Taking the wall down and rebuilding with the correct thickness, foundation, reinforcement and drainage. The reliable outcome.

Re-grade to reduce retained height
Where possible, reducing the level difference or splitting it into two lower terraces reduces the structural demand dramatically.

Structural design input
For higher walls, walls with surcharge, or walls near boundaries and structures, a designed solution is the right route.

- Is a leaning retaining wall dangerous?
- It can be. Walls retaining significant height can fail suddenly. Keep people away from below it and get it assessed rather than monitored indefinitely.
- Do retaining walls need weep holes?
- Some form of pressure relief is essential - weep holes, a land drain behind the wall, or both. Without them, water does the damage.
- Can a bulging wall be pushed back?
- No. Once the units have moved, the geometry and bond are gone. The section has to be taken down and rebuilt.
- Do I need permission for a retaining wall?
- Height, position relative to boundaries and highways, and what is retained all matter. Check with your local authority for anything substantial.
