Gravel spreading, rutting and migrating off the driveway
Loose gravel is the cheapest driveway surface to install and the most expensive in maintenance time. Every car that turns on it moves stone.
Fortunately the fixes are well-established and mostly involve giving the stone something to sit in rather than sit on.

How to tell this is your problem
- Bare patches where the sub-base shows through
- Ridges of stone building up at the edges and gate line
- Ruts forming along the wheel tracks
- Gravel migrating onto the pavement or lawn
- Stone travelling towards the low end of a slope
Repair or replace?
Repair and stabilise - gravel drives rarely need full excavation. Most of the value comes from a grid plus proper edging.
Repair options, cheapest first

Install a gravel stabilisation grid
Honeycomb cells filled with angular stone hold the surface in place, eliminate ruts and cut maintenance to almost nothing. Retrofits over a prepared base.

Add edge restraint
Timber, steel or block edging along the perimeter and either side of the gate stops stone escaping.

Change the stone
Switching from rounded shingle to a 10-20mm angular chipping makes an immediate difference to how the surface locks together.

Resin-bonded finish
Where a gravel look is wanted without loose stone, a bonded or bound finish over a solid base gives the appearance with none of the raking.
Why it happens
No containment grid
Loose stone on an open base has nothing holding it laterally, so wheel loads push it sideways with every movement.
Wrong stone shape or size
Rounded pea shingle rolls; angular chippings around 10-20mm knit together far better.
Too deep a layer
More than about 40-50mm of loose stone behaves like ball bearings. Depth is not the same as durability.
Slope and no edging
On any gradient, gravel walks downhill. Without edge restraint it leaves the drive entirely.
Cost and time on site
Indicative cost
Grid retrofit is priced per square metre plus stone. Edging is by linear metre. Bonded finishes are priced as a resin installation.
Typical duration
Grid and re-stone on a typical drive is usually one to two days.

- What is the best gravel size for a driveway?
- Angular chippings around 10-20mm are the usual choice - big enough not to lodge in tyre treads, small enough to walk on comfortably.
- Do gravel grids really work?
- Yes, provided they are laid on a properly compacted sub-base and filled level. Laid on soft ground they simply move as a unit.
- How deep should gravel be?
- Around 30-50mm over a grid or membrane. Deeper is not better - it makes the surface less stable, not more.
- Will a membrane stop rutting?
- A membrane separates stone from soil and helps with weeds and contamination. It does not provide lateral restraint, which is what stops rutting.
